The future of Tottenham Hotspur defender, Tony Alderwireld could be away from the Lilywhites next season. This possibility happens following latest reports suggesting that the defender is on his way to sign for AS Roma.
According to Calciomercato.com, Roma have been making serious approach towards Alderweireld in recent weeks. The Belgium international reportedly is keen on moving as the Italian side are offering 3.5 million Euro per year plus bonuses.
Il Giallorossi have been talking with the player’s agent and a personal agreement looks set already. However, the Italian capital side must now persuade Tottenham in letting their star defender leave.
Alderweireld actually has a 25 million Euro release clause as his contract runs out next summer. However, Roma are not prepare to pay that fixed amount and hoping that Spurs can give them a discount.
There’s always an opportunity for the Serie A side to get a lower fee, but it won’t be easy to negotiate with Spurs. Tottenham were not keen on releasing the versatile defender last season, despite interest from Manchester United.
Man United were also looking to pay lesser money for Alderweireld, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side rejected the offer. Tottenham went on to activate the center back’s automatic one year extension instead to keep him at the club.
